About the Event

Join us for an online Book Club with novelist Jeanette Winterson as she talks about her latest novel Frankisstein.

We may be in lockdown, but many of us are using this time as an opportunity to catch up on all those books we've always been meaning to read. Please join us for a new online Book Club, in which the Guardian's chief books writer Lisa Allardicewill be in conversation with leading writers to discuss their best-loved novels, the creative process and isolation. They will also be answering your questions. Bring your own wine!

Jeanette Winterson will join us to talk about Frankisstein, her reworking of Mary Shelley’s gothic novel for the AI era. Beginning in 1816 with Shelley at Lake Geneva composing Frankenstein, the narrative jumps forward to the present day world of transgender doctor Ry Shelley, who is researching the effects of Artificial Intelligence. In a riotous story that involves cryogenics, rogue science and sexbots, Winterson explores notions of gender, identity, our anxious relationship with technology and the responsibilities of creation.

Winterson’s books include her memoir, Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? and critically acclaimed novels including The Passion and Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit

Running time: 60 minutes
