About the Event

Acclaimed historian Ben Macintyre tells the incredible story of the greatest female spy in history. In a quiet Cotswolds village in 1942, an elegant housewife emerged from her cottage to go on her usual bike ride. Mrs Burton seemed to epitomise rural British domesticity.

Rather than pedalling towards the shops with her ration book, she was racing through the countryside gathering scientific intelligence from one of the country’s most brilliant nuclear physicists. Secrets that she would transmit to Soviet intelligence headquarters with the radio transmitter she hid in her privy. An exhilarating account of a life that encompasses the rise and fall of communism itself and altered the course of history.

In order to manage audiences safely into each of our venues, we ask that you arrive up to 40 minutes before the event starts. See the Plan Your Visit section for detailed venue arrival times.
