About the Event

To celebrate the publication of Klara and the Sun, the first novel from Kazuo Ishiguro since he won the Nobel Prize in Literature, Waterstones are proud to present a unique opportunity to meet the author for a virtual signing, with personal dedications, and to hear a special reading from the new book.

The novel tells the story of Klara, an Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities, who, from her place in the store, watches carefully the behaviour of those who come in to browse, and of those who pass in the street outside. She remains hopeful a customer will soon choose her, but when the possibility emerges that her circumstances may change for ever, Klara is warned not to invest too much in the promises of humans.

A thrilling feat of world-building, a novel of exquisite tenderness and impeccable restraint, Klara and the Sun is a magnificent achievement, and an international literary event.

Please note that tickets for this event require a UK postal address. Please do not purchase a ticket if you do not have a valid UK postal address as you will not receive the book and may still be charged. Books will be posted via Royal Mail after the event.

This event begins on Zoom. Please make sure you have Zoom installed and up to date on the device of your choice.

The event continues on Streamyard which works on Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Opera. Chrome is recommended for the best experience.

"Klara and the Sun confirms Ishiguro as a master prose stylist"
Evening Standard
"Despite its memorable main character, Klara and the Sun feels in the end like a novel that’s rather too full of unfired guns"
The Daily Telegraph
"This tale of a young girl’s robot is classic Ishiguro — oblique and deeply poignant"
The Sunday Times
"A deft dystopian fable about the innocence of a robot that asks big questions about existence"
Financial Times
"Ishiguro has written another masterpiece, a work that makes us feel afresh the beauty and fragility of our humanity."
The Observer
"People will absolutely love this book, in part because it enacts the way we learn how to love."
The Guardian
"a vision of humanity which — while not exactly optimistic — is tender, touching and true."
The Times
"“Klara and the Sun” complements his brilliant vision, though it doesn’t reach the artistic heights of his past achievements"
The New York Times
