About the Event

Two lyrical and socially engaged writers, Monique Roffey and Salena Godden, join us to speak about the construction of their genre-bending novels. Trinidadian author Monqiue Roffey’s The Mermaid of Black Conch won 2020 Costa Book of the Year. Her unconventional love story sees a fisherman fall for a mermaid, but not the feminine, hair-combing kind you might expect, as Roffey re-imagines mythical creatures through a feminist lens. Poet and performer Salena Godden presents her fantastically imaginative debut, Mrs Death Misses Death, in which death is personified as a series of black women.

Come and hear about poetic language, re-imagining fiction, and how their books speak to each other in this conversation chaired by Alex Clark.
